Feminist criminology

ABSTRACT

This essay argues for a transformative critical feminist criminology that is more globally oriented ,needs a commitment to social justice , and explicitly theorizes gender. The necessity of moving beyond positive ideas of “science” and embracing fundamental components of a feminist approach to methodology most notably, the epistemological insights gained from a fresh perspective on research, methodologies, and the relationship between the knower and the known is essential to this rethinking of an established field. Other important character tics of modern feminist criminology include a clear dedication to interjectionally recognition of the special status of women in the male dominated sectors of corrections and law enforcement, emphasis on masculinity, and the gender gap in significant crime , a critical evaluation of corporate media and the demonetization of women and girls of color, and an understanding of the value of women’s and girls’ studies for the advancement of a critical, international feminist criminology

INTRODUCTION

The dynamic and ever evolving discipline of feminist criminology question conventional wisdom regarding crime and the criminal justice system. Overview of feminist criminology, its guiding ideas, and its influence on the field of crime and justice studies will be discussed in his article.

FEMINIST CRIMINOLOGY OVERVIEW

The shortcomings of traditional criminology , which mainly disregarded the distinct experiences and roles of women in crime and victimization , gave rise to feminist scholar , has been dominated by therories and approaches that are male-centric, which has left a lack of understanding regarding women’s involvement in criminal activity.

FEMINIST CRIMINOLOGY CORE

Principles :

1) Gendered Perspective

Gender recognition is a key component in understanding crime, according feminist criminology . it is traditional viewpoints on crime and criminal justice are questioned by the dynamic and developing discipline of feminist criminology’s main ideas and how it has affected the study of crime and justice will be given in this article.

2) Intersectionality :

Intersectionality is a central concept in feminist criminology , highlighting the interconnected nature of various social identities , such as gender , race , class and sexuality. This framework acknowledges that the experiences of women in the criminal justice system are shaped by multiple factors.

3) Critiques of male centric theories :

Feminist criminology critiques traditional criminological theories , such as strain theory or social control theory , for their gender bias. It seeks to develop theories that better explains female criminality and experiences within the criminal justice system .

4). Victimology:

Feminist criminology places a strong emphasis on understanding victimization.it highlights the prevalence of gender-based violence and sexual assault , and explores the inadequacies of the legal system in addressing these issues.

5) Patriarchy and power structures:

Feminist criminology analyzes the role of patriarchy and power structure in perpetuating gender inequality and contributing to crime . it examines how social, economic , and political factors influence women criminal behavior and their interactions with the criminal justice system.

Impact and Criticism :

Criminal justice and criminology have both benefited greatly form feminist criminology. A more thorough understanding of crime has resulted form it , highlighting how crucial it is to address gender based violence and inequality. But it has also drawn criticism, with some contending that it ignores individual agency in criminal behavior and generalizes the experiences the experiences of women.

Conclusion:

The study of crime and justice now has access to new research and theoretical perspectives thanks to feminist criminology . it has illuminated previously unnoticed issues and contributed to a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of the complexities of criminal behavior and victimization by focusing on the gendered aspects of crime and the criminals justice system.
